Chemonics seeks an early childhood development specialist for the anticipated five-year, $50- to $99-million USAID-funded Shekhar Jonno Pori (Read to Learn) activity in Bangladesh. Shekhar Jonno Pori will support the Bangladeshi government and its sector-wide Fourth Primary Education Development Program, schools, and teachers to improve early grade reading. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world. The early childhood development specialist is a mid- to senior-level technical position that will report to the senior education advisor. Responsibilities include:
- Assess and evaluate children’s developmental needs using hands-on projects, speech assessments, and mental development tests; recommend appropriate interventions
- Provide technical assistance to counterparts to strengthen the system for socialization, observation, and evaluation to assess child behavior and implement activities to develop children socially, emotionally, intellectually, creatively, and physically
- Provide technical assistance to improve instructional support, mentoring, planning, and coaching for teachers to enhance the quality of pre-primary literacy and math programs
- Oversee management and coordination of capacity building activities for counterparts in pre-primary curriculum planning and implementation, early learning environment, and school-readiness initiatives
- Provide guidance on curriculum implementation and facilitate ongoing curriculum collaboration among technical staff and stakeholders
- Engage communities and parents on child development, child care, and related issues
Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in child development, child psychology, early childhood education, developmental psychology, or a combination of experience in child development or a related field required
- Minimum 10 years of experience in education, training, and childhood development; teaching license strongly preferred
- Extensive knowledge of private and public child development programs and principles, theories, practices, and methods used in early childhood classroom instruction
- Ability to maintain up-to-date knowledge of current child development practices and of research-based early childhood quality/education methods and approaches
- Understanding of developmentally appropriate practice in early childhood education and the ability to support its use in school-readiness goals
- Strong communications and interpersonal skills required
- Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity
- Fluency in English
