The Program

The goal of the BEQUAL program is to ensure more girls and boys of primary school age, particularly those experiencing disadvantage, achieve functional literacy and numeracy and acquire life skills. The program addresses education policy, planning and coordination, increased child participation in and access to basic education, teacher education and improved school infrastructure.

BEQUAL’s key activities through to August 2020 focus on assisting the MoES with the roll out of the national new curriculum for grades 1–5 and includes intensified support at targeted districts aimed at improving learning outcomes for children from disadvantaged groups.

Coffey is now seeking applications for a Materials Development Specialist to join this significant and high performing education program.

The Position

The revision of the primary curriculum and development of learning materials is currently underway. Textbooks and/or teacher guides will be developed on a grade by grade basis for all subjects along with supplementary materials for Teacher Resource Packs and Story Book Sets to support teaching and learning in each grade.

Located at the Research Institute for Educational Sciences (RIES) the Materials Development Specialist will work with the Teaching and Learning Resources Unit to manage the layout, design and preparation of textbooks, teacher guides and other materials to camera ready copy (CRC) stage ready for printing and distribution.

The position will assist subject specialists in the selection of non-print materials to include in the Teacher Resource Packs, and provide advice to the specialists who are developing materials for teacher in-service programs and for the new teacher-training curriculum.

The Person

The ideal candidate will have experience in the development and publication of teaching learning or training materials at a system level in low-resources environments as well as senior level publishing experience for a large organisation.

Coupled with a strong ability to schedule, structure and supervise the full range of pre-production tasks associated with development of CRC, you will be experienced in the supervision of in-house and freelance personnel across a range of publishing-related services. Your knowledge of all publishing and printing processes and of procurement practices and procedures in relation to educational goods and services will be an advantage.

Along with effective communication, capacity building, coaching and facilitation skills, knowledge of how to ensure that print materials comply with DFAT-mandated standards in relation to gender equity, disability and social inclusion is essential.

Post graduate qualifications in a relevant field together with experience in a government or non-commercial sector and previous experience in the education sector, within South East Asia or Lao PDR are highly desirable.
