Country: Lao People's Democratic Republic (the)
Closing date: 10 Sep 2018
MAG Vacancy: Technical Field Manager, Laos The total package for this position is £57,204 per annum (c. USD $75,038) including salary and all allowances.
About MAG: MAG saves lives and builds futures by working with others to reclaim land contaminated with the debris of conflict, to reduce the daily risk of death or injury for civilians, and to create safe and secure conditions for development. MAG shared the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize as a founding member of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines for our work to ban landmines. Our vision is a safe and secure future for men, women and children affected by armed violence and conflict.
About the Laos programme: Laos has the unenviable title of being the most bombed country in the world per capita. For nearly a decade, Laos was subjected to heavy US bombing as part of the wider war in Indochina. US bombing records show that at least two million metric tonnes of ordnance was dropped between 1964 and 1973.
Working across Xieng Khouang and Khammouane provinces since 1994, MAG has directly helped more than 900,000 people to live safer lives, free from danger and fear. Another 2.1 million men, women and children have benefitted indirectly. Our teams have cleared more than 58,000,000 square metres of land in Laos, removing and destroying more than 211,000 items of UXO, including nearly 90,000 cluster sub munitions.
In addition, MAG has given more than 2,900 risk education sessions to around 194,000 people, helping them to stay safe until land is cleared.
About the role: Our Technical Field Managers are the core of our work and actively manage and lead our teams of national staff to safely implement our life saving BAC and EOD projects. Locations of roles can vary, with some being located in main provincial town where there are many amenities available and others in remote areas, working in contexts away from home comforts. This is a fantastic opportunity to be involved in MAG’s life-saving work on a day-to-day basis, where the impact on the local communities is very real, and rewarding.
About you: You must be qualified to the equivalent of EOD level 3, with significant experience in the technical and operational management of UXO and Cluster Munitions clearance operations, including task planning and prioritisation, writing and reviewing SOPs, assessing clearance methodology and reviewing operational structures. You will also be experienced in leading teams involved in BAC / EOD operations, with proven experience in the disposal of Aircraft Dropped Bombs. Previous experience of working for a similar organisation, either in the humanitarian or commercial sector is essential. Furthermore, you will have experience in delivering training, and be able to mentor and capacity build national staff. You will have a good understanding of information management systems and data analysis to improve operational planning, setting priorities and monitoring of clearance activities. MAG takes the conduct of its staff very seriously, and therefore you will also be required to demonstrate impeccable conduct and respect for others, and the cultures in which we work.
