The Program

The goal of the BEQUAL program is to ensure more girls and boys of primary school age, particularly those experiencing disadvantage, achieve functional literacy and numeracy and acquire life skills. The program addresses education policy, planning and coordination, increased child participation in and access to basic education, teacher education and improved school infrastructure.

BEQUAL’s key activities through to August 2020 focus on assisting the MoES with the development and implementation of the national new curriculum for grades 1–5 and includes intensified support at targeted districts aimed at improving learning outcomes for children from disadvantaged groups.

Coffey is now seeking applications for a Lao Language Curriculum Specialist to join this significant and high performing education program.

The Position

The Teacher Curriculum Specialist – Primary, Lao Language will work in partnership with the Teacher Development Centre and Department of Teacher Education to support knowledge and skills development for Teacher Training College lecturers, in order for them to be well positioned to teach the new pre-service curriculum for primary teachers in training. This will include the development of curriculum materials for Lao language, skills development, and monitoring progress of this professional development package and adapting as necessary.

The Person

The ideal candidate will have experience in the development of curriculum materials at a system level in low-resources environments as well as developing teacher guides and learning materials in Lao Language. Coupled with a strong teaching experience, demonstrated experience in facilitating interactive workshops, coaching and mentoring of national counterparts, you will be experienced in teaching and education in a developing country context.

Along with effective communication, capacity building, coaching and facilitation skills, knowledge of how children’s language develops and how children acquire early literacy is essential, along with knowledge of second language learning methodologies, multilingual educational context and learner-centred teaching methodologies. Lao language competency, written and oral would be an advantage.

Postgraduate qualifications in second language learning, linguistics or equivalent, together with experience in a government or non-commercial sector and previous experience in the education sector, within South East Asia or Lao PDR are highly desirable.
