Position Available: Speech Pathologist
We are looking for a volunteer speech pathologist to provide mentorship and teaching in a new non-profit paediatric hospital in the beautiful town of Luang Prabang, Laos. We opened the hospital in 2015 and have Outpatient, Inpatients and the Emergency Department operational at present. Our surgical unit is planned for in June/July.
The position would requires a minimum of 1 month commitment but 2 months or more are preferred.
This is a unique opportunity for those looking to gain international health & clinical experience in a developing/lesser-developed country setting. Luang Prabang is a quiet and charming tourist-friendly town along the banks of the Mekong River. There are plenty of opportunities for weekend sightseeing trips in the surrounding area.
Responsibilities
· Identifying children's developmental speech and communication difficulties/disorders;
· Assessing and treating swallowing and communication difficulties arising from a range of causes.
· Adapting educational materials and equipment for the purpose of providing intervention to meet the patient’s needs
· Devising, implementing and revising relevant treatment programs
· Training Lao staff in therapy delivery
· Contributing to the evaluation of projects and developments;
Qualifications
· Degree in Speech-Language Pathology
· Experience in working in low resource setting preferred
· Experience with ESL (English as a second language) staff
Benefits
This is a volunteer position with a preferred 1 month minimum commitment up to 6+months. A small monthly allowance can be provided to help cover some basic costs such as food & housing for commitments of 2+ months. The role is required to be filled throughout the year and as such applications will be accepted for various time throughout the year.
