UN Volunteer ― UNV Communication and Media Relations Officer with WHO in Bangladesh

Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Description of task

Under the overall guidance of WHO Representative to Bangladesh and direct supervision of Deputy WHO Representative, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for:

  • Conceptualizing, designing and implementing WHO’s communication strategies including the dissemination of public information), ensuring that the latter support the programmes and objectives;
  • Advising on the country-wide planning, implementation and evaluation of the organization’s policy and strategies in the field of public information and education for health;
  • Maintaining contacts with mass media, other UN Information Officers, Governmental organizations and Non-governmental organizations, with the aim to encourage the production and dissemination of information relevant to the implementation of national health strategies;
  • Planning, drafting and preparing press releases, feature articles, fact sheets, visibility materials for donor funded project (including donor alert) in consultation with the technical teams.;
  • Ensuring production of quality communication materials such as print, electronic materials and website updates by soliciting information from sources within and outside WHO Bangladesh. Also, providing consulting inputs on their design and layout;
  • Supporting the generation and/or maintenance of research and specialized information at the request of WR and direct reports, to support programmes;
  • Communicating brand guidelines to employees and partners;
  • Coordination with the WHO BAN WEB Specialist for the overall management of WHO BAN website, regular/timely updates and reviewing website content;
  • Organizing and moderating press/technical briefings for the media and coordinating between media and WHO experts to ensure timely, efficient provision of information to the press;
  • Facilitate networking and providing support for advocacy and profile building activities of WHO BAN;
  • Coverage of WHO BAN activities and meetings and acting as press officer for major policy events such as World Health Day as well as other national meetings involving WHO;
  • Maintaining, updating and using the WHO BAN website homepage, as an essential tool of communication with general public and media during emergencies;
  • Performing any other related tasks as advised by the supervisors

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level: Master degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

  • Essential: University degree in Journalism/Mass Communication with exposure to advocacy and communications work in the area of health and / or development;

  • Desirable: Post-graduate degree in any of the related fields.

Required experience: 24 Months

Experience remark:

  • Essential: At least 2 years of experience in the field of communications, networking and liaison-building activities and preferably with experience working in developing countries.
  • Knowledge & Skills: Knowledge of Mass Communication; Very good ability to build and maintain relations and network with national authorities and other stakeholders across relevant sectors. Understanding of the potential motivating factors within national context and ability to adjust to new approaches in an increasingly complex environment; Modern management skills (planning & evaluation, etc). Capacity to prepare terms of references and to prepare and monitor and manage the implementation of contractual agreements; Communicating in a credible and effective way; Producing results; Fostering integration and teamwork; Proven leadership and management skills in the field of planning, monitoring and evaluation for development results; Proven capacity to implement results based management strategies which improve project performance and results; Strategic and risk management, negotiation, mediation and team working skills; Excellent report writing, policy analysis and analytical skills; Excellent oral and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with a range of stakeholders; Skills in developing results based management systems, adapting policies and techniques to local circumstances; Proven capacity to demonstrate tact discretion and integrity and provide impartial services; Good understanding of the role and functions of democratic governance in Bangladesh; Proven programme support and project management skills; Excellent computer skills and ability to use information management as a tool and resource for capacity development and institutional strengthening.

Language skills:

  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent

Area of expertise: Journalism, mass media and broadcasting, Public information and reporting, Other communications-related experience

Area of expertise details:

  • Word processing, spread-sheet, Power point, Adobe Photoshop and other computer applications.

  • Proven capacity to implement results-based management strategies which improve project performance and results.

  • Strategic and risk management, negotiation, mediation and team working skills.

  • Excellent report writing, policy analysis and analytical skills.

  • Excellent oral and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with a range of stakeholders.

  • Proven capacity to demonstrate tact discretion and integrity and provide impartial services.

  • Good understanding of the role and functions of democratic governance in Bangladesh.

  • Proven programme support and project management skills.
