POSITION Description

POSITION TITLE: Gender Specialist

PROJECT: Feed the Future Bangladesh Women’s Empowerment Activity (WEA)

LOCATION: Dhaka, Bangladesh

UNIT: Education and Empowerment

REPORTS TO: Chief of Party

PROGRAM Summary:

The goal of the Women’s Empowerment Activity (WEA) project is to increase women’s empowerment and gender parity. The three-year project is carried out in five districts in the USAID Feed the Future Zone in Bangladesh -- Jessore, Barguna, Patukhali, Barisal and Khulna. WEA is designed to promote and increase women’s empowerment at the household and community levels through increased community leadership; improved decision-making over productive resources; improved control over income; strengthened decision-making in agricultural production; and improved time use.

ESSENTIAL Responsibilities:**

Specific responsibilities of the Gender Specialist position include but are not limited to:

  • Leads activities related to gender analysis and programming, specifically leadership development, community engagement, and behavior change; and women’s empowerment in decision making, control and management of assets.

  • Oversees implementation of Entrepreneurial Literacy Training for Empowerment (ELTE) for women and men, and leadership training for local leaders.

  • With the Chief of Party, supports USAID Feed the Future, and other donor-funded programs to maximize gender integration and leverage opportunities contributing to greater women’s empowerment.

  • Collaborates with other project staff stakeholders, and partners to deliver far-reaching results and impact in line with program expectations.

  • Oversees gender integration into all training materials, public awareness and outreach strategies, project communications, and other key activities.

  • Coordinates design and facilitation of women’s empowerment and gender training for project staff, partners, and other key stakeholders, and ensures partners understand the project’s overall women’s empowerment approach.

  • Collaborates with M&E and program staff to ensure monitoring systems appropriately capture gender outcomes, monitor potential unintended consequences, and assist program staff and partners to take corrective action, as needed.

  • Liaises with GOB stakeholders at national, district and local levels to help align project activities with national priorities and identify opportunities for coordination.

  • Contributes regularly to project deliverables, including progress reports, work plans, and others.

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Provide other administrative support or duties as assigned to the HR team.

Qualifications and Background:

Education:

  • Minimum of a Master’s degree in gender studies, development, or a relative discipline.

Experience:

  • Minimum ten years’ experience of progressive professional experience in gender analysis and programming.

Skills/Knowledge:

  • Ability to maintain the highest ethical standards at all times

  • Demonstrated experience working on projects promoting women’s empowerment, including training curriculum development and delivery.

  • Demonstrated experience in personnel and NGO partner management.

  • Solid experience in Behavioral Change Communication (BCC) related to acceptance of women’s empowerment.

  • Extensive experience working with relevant government agencies as well as local and international NGOs addressing women’s empowerment, livelihoods, entrepreneurship and related issues in Bangladesh.

  • Extensive field-based experience in in the WEA focus districts highly desired

  • Excellent communications skills in Bangla and English (FSI level IV), both written and orally.

  • Willingness to travel and work throughout the country, as needed.

  • Must be able to provide the right to work in Bangladesh
